MURPHY RENEGADE II

TYPE: Tandem-seat ultralight biplane kitbuilt.

PROGRAMME: Prototype Renegade II made first flight May 1985; first kits became available September that year. Ready assembled aircraft, plans and kits are available.

CUSTOMERS: By end-2002, 630 Renegade IIs and Renegade Spirits had been completed and flown.

COSTS: Quick-bild kit US$13,500; full materials kit US$9,500; partial parts kit US$3,600; plans US$325 (2003 prices).

DESIGN FEATURES: Sporting biplane of classic configuration. Conforms to TP101.41 ultralights regulations in Canada and some European countries. Optional wingtip extensions (for countries such as UK requiring lower wing loadings) increase gross area to 15,83 m2 (170.4 sq ft). Optional extended wings and rounded tips; optional floats and parachute.
NACA 23012 wing section; 10o sweepback on upper wings; 3o dihedral on non-swept lower wings. Angle of incidence for both wings of 4o.
Kits in four standards ranging from partial parts kit to 300/400 working hour quick-build kit with all parts premanufactured plus partly assembled fuselage, wings and engine mounting.

FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional and manual. Differentially rigged Frise ailerons.

STRUCTURE: Fabric-covered aluminium tubing; rear fuselage top-decking of preformed glass fibre; two-spar wings have aluminium sheet leading-edges; glass fibre wingtips optional; wire-braced tail assembly.

LANDING GEAR: Tailwheel type; fixed. Tailwheel steerable. Bungee cord suspension system.

POWER PLANT: One 34.0 kW (45.6 hp) Rotax 503 UL-1V two-cylinder two-stroke engine standard; 37.0 kW (49.6 hp) twin-carburettor Rotax 503 UL-2V optional. Alternative engines up to 59.6 kW (80 hp) can be fitted, including Rotax 582 and Teledyne Continental O-65, O-75 and O-85. Fuel capacity 53 litres (14.0 US gallons; 11.6 Imp gallons).
