German-based Aviation Archive Service (AAS) is a specialist for the stringent archiving requirements of the aerospace industry. Increasingly we find ourselves providing consultancy for corporations as well as small and medium-sized companies in other industries. In the process, our goal is to create a long-term relationship with our customers.

Conception, development and operation of digital and traditional archiving systems

The main emphasis of our work is the conception, development and operation of digital and traditional archiving systems. We offer solutions to meet the demands of professional long-term archiving and at the same time satisfying the individual requirements of our customers.

AAS was founded in May 2004. The founder and managing director Uwe Kraft has been working for consulting companies in the fields of documentation and archiving since the mid 1990’s. AAS is located in the center of Hamburg, one of the world’s largest aviation centers. In addition, a number of employees are active at our customers’ locations.

Documentation and archiving services

Professional documentation and archiving supports the daily operations of a modern business, protects it against damage claims, and assists with knowledge retention and reuse. A secure long-term archiving solution is especially important for research-oriented companies.

But where should a company keep all of these documents? Should its storage method be digital or paper-based? What are the requirements of courts, government agencies and big corporations, such as large aircraft manufacturers? What do supplier companies have to observe? How does one archive documents compliant with legal regulations? What has to be saved and for how long? How does one ensure that a specific document can quickly be found in the archives? AAS offers companies individual solutions to these pressing questions with our archiving and documentation services.

Digital archiving

AAS establishes a digital archive and will, if required, take over complete implementation, starting with the digitalization process and including quality control project management. AAS assists organizations to develop common attributes for a uniform content-based indexing of heterogenous documents.

Internal or external long-term document archive

After taking the specific needs and situation of the company into consideration, AAS will structure or re-structure the physical archives and create a concept for an internal or external long-term archive.

Aerospace document discovery

For companies in the aerospace industry in particular, AAS will research and analyze all necessary documents of evidence for presentation to a court of law, attorneys or government agencies in cases of damage claims.

Archiving software development

AAS develops search systems and research applications as well as tools to provide solutions to unique problems for the entire field of archiving.

Archiving and documentation consulting services

AAS provides consultation for its customers in all issues concerning documentation and archiving. This consultation encompasses all areas and stages of development in professional archiving starting with an idea and progressing to a tailor-made solution for the smooth operation of archives.

AEROSTYLE ULTRALEICHT FLUGZEUGE GmbH

The company's first product, the Breezer, is now in full production.

AQUILA TECHNISCHE ENTWICKLUNGEN GmbH

Company formed August 1996 to develop A210; employed 12 staff at Schonhagen aerodrome by Aptil 2000; increased to 20 during 2001 and reached 35 by December 2002, following mid-2000 commissioning of new production hangar; capacity 50 aircraft per year. Distrubutors for France, Belgium and Netherlands have been appointed.

AVCRAFT AEROSPACE GmbH

On 20 December 2002, AvCraft agreed purchase of former Fairchild Dornier 328Jet and 428 programmes with bankruptcy administrators; assets included Dornier name, type and production certificates, tooling, spares stock, production parts and works production (five aircraft on assembly line and 18 'white tails'). Sale finalised in January 2003 and last of assets formally transferred in September 2003, at which time AvCraft had sold three-quarters of the 'white tail' stock and executed first delivery (Hainan Airlines).

B&F TECHNIK VERTRIEBS GmbH

The FK series, which began in 1959, is designed by father and son, Dipl Ing Otto Funk and Peter Funk. B&F continues to market the original FK 9 ultralight in parallel to a new version in composites. Latest products are the nostalgic FK 12 and FK 14 Polaris composites ultralights and a version of FK 9 powered by a Smart motorcar engine, development of which is being undertaken by Otto Funk's company Ecofly.
Work on B&F's new 900 m2 (9,700 sq ft) factory on the same airfield began in January 2002.
In 2003, B&F employed six people at its headquarters plus a further 45 at its Krosno, Poland, factory.

BECKER FLUGFUNKWERK GmbH

The headquarter of Becker Avionic Systems is located in the Baden Airpark, 77836 Rheinmunster, Germany. Becker Avionic Systems has a worldwide net of independent Becker owned companies with integrated repair facilities for General Aviation as well as military applications. Due to the worldwide activities Becker Avionic Systems is acting inside Germany as well as in all foreign markets as a well known and qualified supplier to military and civil customers.
Becker is an approved company for development, manufacturing and product support of avionic equipment and systems and is holding the appropriate certificates of domestic and foreign airworthiness authorities.

BUSSARD DESIGN GmbH

A design services subcontractor to the aerospace and automotive industries, Bussard plans to enter lightplane manufacturing with its own concept, the Raptor.

C+C FLYING GmbH

In 2003, C+C was building a prototype of its latest design, the CC/03.

CARGOLIFTER AG

Company formed on 1 September 1996 to continue development of CargoLifter large multipurpose airship for transportation of heavy and outsize cargoes. Nominal start-up capital of DM15.5 million; by June 2001, some 27 million shares sold in Germany and internationally and raised capital €40.5 million (DM79.2 million). Huge, 360x210x107 m (1.181x689x351 ft), 5.5 million m3 (194.2 million cu ft) hangar at Brand, south of Berlin, began construction March 1999 and completed in November 2000; can house two CL 160s. Second hangar was planned at new site in South Carolina, USA, for completion in about 2005. Full-size CL 160 preceded by subscale 'Joey' as proof-of-concept prototype and CL 75 AirCrane transport ballon; Skyship 600B, known as 'Charly', acquired in July 2000 for crew training, certified by LBA August 2001 abd re-registered D-LCLA.
Additional shares offered in November 2001 in attempt to increase capital to a potential €50.6 million, but insufficient investment received. US office closed as economy measure in second quarter 2002, and on 9 May company offered convertible bonds to general public in renewed effort to raise working capital. However, this also failed to meet expectations and, on 28 May, CargoLifter admitted inability to pay creditors or employees. Applications for insolvency filed, on 31 May and 7 June 2002 respectively, by CargoLifter Development GmbH (wholly owned subsidiary) and CargoLifter AG; Professor Dr Rolf-Dieter Monning appointed administrator for both companies. Number of shareholders at latter date was 72,000. CargoLifter AG restructured under two-man management board in order to develop new programme concept which would focus first on sales and production of CL 75 AirCrane, while maintaining core competencies for eventual realisation of CL 160. However, plans suffered further setback on 11 July 2002 when envelope of sole CL 75 AirCrane was ruptured during a storm.
Letter of intent signed with Boeing Phantom Works on 2 May 2002, under which each to investigate business opportunities for CL 160 "beyond CargoLifter's current focus"; Boeing interest said to include military surveillance possibilities; was reaffirmed in 30 July 2002 announcement of contract signature between CargoLifter AG and Boeing Unmanned Systems for joint exploration of stratospheric airship concets.
Insolvency proceedings began on 1 August 2002; on 9 August, application for public sector assistance was rejected by German Ministry of Economic Affairs. Workforce was 491 in early June 2002, of whom 284 involved in airship development at Brand, but most of these suspended by insolvency administrator, leaving a staff of only 30 by mid-August 2002.
