SAUPER J300 SERIES 3 JOKER

TYPE: Tandem-seat ultralight.

PROGRAMME: Design by Tony Minguet in 1987. Series 3, introduced in 2000, has modified empennage, wider windscreen, lower door sills and new instrument panel; JAR-VLA certification is planned.

CURRENT VERSIONS: Civilian version is used for private flying, crop-spraying and aerial photography. Military version features larger tyres and a full instrument panel including artificial horizon, UHF radio, GPS and transponder. Float-equipped aircraft are offered as an option.

CUSTOMERS: Total 90 built by 2003, include at least 15 in Africa. Two evaluated by the French Army in 1996.

COSTS: €38,200 (2003) excluding tax.

DESIGN FEATURES: Braced, high-wing monoplane with mid-mounted, braced tailplane; constant chord wing with tapered tips.
Wing section Clark Y; 2.2o anhedral.

FLYING CONTROLS: Conventional and manual. Self-centring (by helical spring) elevator. Horn-balanced rudder. Flight-adjustable tab in each elevator. No flaps.

STRUCTURE: Welded steel (25CD4S) tube airframe; Diatex 1500EV3 fabric covering; composites engine cowling.

LANDING GEAR: Tailwheel type; fixed. Mainwheels 8.00-6; speed fairings optional; hydraulic Grimeca brakes; tailwheel 2.60x85. Nosewheel version under development.

POWER PLANT: One 59.6 kW (79.9 hp) Rotax 912 or (optional) 73.5 kW (98.6 hp) Rotax 912 ULS flat-four driving a DUC Helices three-blade propeller is standard; options include engines from BMW, JPX and Limbach. Two fuel tanks beneath seats, each 48.0 litres (12.7 US gallons; 10.6 Imp gallons) capacity. Oil capacity 3.0 litres (0.8 US gallon; 0.7 Imp gallon).

SYSTEMS: 12 V 17 Ah battery.

AVIONICS: Comms: IC A3 radio and intercom. Optional Bendix/King KY 97 VHF.
Flight: Garmin GPS 92 standard; GPS 295 optional.

EQUIPMENT: Optional ballistic parachute.
